Dr. Roter saw my daughter today and he answered all of my questions, made her feel comfortable while dilating her eyes and was very thorough and knowledgeable. It was confirmed my daughter will need glasses (elementary) and he will check on her progress again next month. Dr. was a bit behind on patients so there was a bit of a wait, but I’d definitely recommend!!

This is a review about an experience my family had years ago that left a lasting impression, not for the service, but for the subtle racism we experienced.

I used to bring my entire family of six here for eye exams. One day, I brought my oldest daughter in for her appointment. During the visit, she mentioned that she wanted to become an optometrist. I told the doctor that she was interested in his field and asked about his experience.

His response? He looked at her and said, “She would make a good nurse.”

I corrected him: “I said optometrist, not nurse.” He repeated, “She would make a good nurse.”

When I asked again about the field of optometry, he shifted and said the market was saturated, a dismissive and discouraging response to a young Black girl expressing her ambition. It reminded me of when Malcolm X told his teacher he wanted to be a doctor, and the teacher told him he’d do better as a carpenter.

That day, I recognized it for what it was:subtle, quiet racism, the kind that limits dreams by lowering expectations. We never returned. He lost six patients that day because I refuse to expose my children to someone who tries to dim their light.

Thankfully, my daughter didn’t let his words define her. She pushed forward. Today, she is an endocrinologist.

Let this be a reminder: we see the racism, even when it’s soft-spoken and smiling. Shame on you as a doctor and as a man.

Glenn Roter is a great doctor and I will recommend others to him. I would of gave 5 stars but I don't like a couple of young ones that work on the side in his office. I called there to make an appointment yesterday and 1 of the girls answered and how she was talking it seemed like she was playing on the phone and was doing things to ignore me and you can hear her laughing like it was funny. I then started to raise my voice then all of a sudden she can hear me just fine. I came there yesterday on the 8th and as I was waiting for a while an older man and his son or grandson came. As he was checking in he was happy and in a good mood and being nice to the girl that was supposed to be checking him in UNTIL she was coming up with excuses for him not to see the Dr. She kept lying to him and saying she can't see him and all that other stupid stuff coming out her mouth that didn't make sense but because he is much older and knows the routine he did make a good point when she was trying to lie. He was saying why she was trying to give him a hard time. So as he was getting calm and about to leave calmly she gave him a stupid face and how she said 'have a nice day' with her smart mouth and looking at him all in a stupid way he was losing it even more and saying to ME how she was being sassy then as I was opening my mouth of how grown folks don't got time for her little self trying to act grown playing games he calmly left. While she gave me my paper with a stupid look on her face I snatched it from her and walked out. ( Them lies she was telling that guy is what I remembered 3 mths ago when a young girl lying to me and saying that my daughter can't be seen and that she can be seen on the 8th of August.) The question rung to my head is How would she know the date when my child should be seen.) If the person working there sees this and not sure what to believe just check the surveillance tapes and see for yourself. There are at least 2 girls working there that should get fired for being childish and thinking it's funny pissing others off. They don't care about the customers and are nice to some but I see that they do these silly things to see who they can control and these Doctors will lose customers because of these little brats probably doing that because they don't like a certain person that comes there for appointments.
UPDATE: Glad they got rid of unprofessional girls. The new young women (staff) are sweet and professional. 😊
